I've been slacking a bit this week, haven't had a lot to post. So I made myself draw tonight. Not terribly impressed with the results. Its funny how things go. The waterfall sketch I meant to be more of a doodle to pass time turned into this really elaborate drawing that i got really into. I wanted this to be this big dramatic cloudscape full of subtle shadings and i just got bored with it. I also discovred conte crayons are really not my favorite medium, i greatly prefer charcoal. They dont smudge well enough and layer on too thick too fast. I couldnt get the smudgin to go dark enough, but the initial marks to lay down color wouldn't smudge into blobs, they stayed too sharp. So it looks more like blobs of black instead of a dramatically lit cloudscape.

Sheri,
You may not have got the results you wanted out of Conté crayons, but what you did get is a stunning drawing! This is beautiful. It may not have the overall subtlty you know you would bet with charcoal, but the contrast between the soft smudges and harsh strokes are very exciting, visually. I like this.
GOOD WORK!
And good work for persevering on your sketching. Keep up the daily schedule. It is especially important to sketch on the days you don't feel like it. It builds discipline. And what you will find, is that the more times you sketch on those days you don't feel like it — the fewer days you will have that you don't feel like sketching. It's kind of like getting into a physical work out regimen.
Another tip. On those days you don't feel like sketching, choose to sketch something you hate drawing or have great difficulty drawing. The rational for this is that on days you don't feel like drawing its because you are tired or uninspired. And the things that usually inspire us to draw are the things we LIKE to draw. So why associate those good things with a bad day? Don't feel like drawing? Draw something you don't like or know how to draw.
Chances are, you will surprise yourself and be quite happy with the result.
