Another day, another post. I had today off so I should have drawn a whole lot. Instead I just drew a page of faces. I did work a bit on a Flash movie I did for class. I didn't finish it to my satisfaction, so I'm trying to do so now. So here are some faces. I was just trying to draw from weird angles such as from below and from above. I have a hard time with both of those. Some turned out better than others, obviously

I think they're pretty good, at least for rough sketches. Obviously you'd go back over them a few times if they were real illustrations, but frankly I'm not so good at the oblique angles so you're way ahead of me in that regard. Keep it up!

This is where some good understanding of underlying anatomy and some basic abstraction of the volumes that 'make-up' a face comes in handy.
George Bridgeman's work is among the easiest to understand and digest. He likes to break the human body down into simple geometric volumes and mechanical functions. This is all good if you have a head for mechanical stuff. If not, then it's not so useful.

But I like how Bridgeman deconstructs/constructs the human face. It really helps with difficult angles like this.
Stay away from the works of Burne Horarth, popular with some artists, but based totally in fantasy – IMHO.
A final thought. From these sketches it feels like you are trying to accomplish too much. You seem to have three (or more) focuses;
- technique - the smooth modeling of the shadows under the chins
- likeness - you seem to be wanting to capture how these people actually look
- understanding how the face looks from this perspective, and how to draw it.
- also you are trying to keep the sketch clean - fuggetaboutit!
- getting distracted by the hair/texture
In sketches like this focus on understanding how the face really looks from this perspective. Everything else is unimportant.
Sketches don't have to be clean. You can have overlapping sketch lines and construction lines. In fact this is a good thing to have in your sketches. Because when you go back in a day or a week to look at them again, your construction lines will help you understand how you chose to create this drawing. You will learn a lot from that. you don't have to capture a likeness, you don't need to draw every strand of hair.
